English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
At Tangara School, English content is delivered from Kindergarten to Year 12.
A love of quality literature drives literacy learning. Many students require the use of augmnentative and alternative communication (AAC) to participate. Digital resources support and facilitate learning engagement.
In our primary school, literacy learning is explicitly taught every morning between 9am - 10.30am delivering a Comprehensive Literacy for All (Erickson & Koppenhaver) program.
Our high school also follows the Comprehensive Literacy for All program, but does do so throughout the day as per the high shcool timetable.
All students have a reading and writing goal included in their personalised learning goals. We also encourage a communication focus for student's personal goals. We have seen a year by year uplift in goal achievement data following the implementation of the explicit literacy framework. Want to know more? We encourage you to contact us for more information.
